Photo Advice and Techniques The following advice appeared in the November issue of Photography Monthly under 200+ Pro secrets to landscape success; advice and techniques from 26 of the worlds best landscape photographers. My advice was: . Know your landscape intimately. Visit an area you are interested in photographing; spend time studying the landscape and soak up the atmosphere. Mark up possible view points on a map and take trial images. . Consider your trial image view points and decide when the light will be at its best. Decide on the best season and optimum time of day. I prefer the colour and light of autumn and winter. . Revisit your view points in your preferred season and times of day until you get the image that you and others like. This can take years! . Dramatic light usually occurs at the point when weather systems change. After days of rain you can expect broken skies with beautiful light. I always watch the weather forcast before deciding to take landscape photographs. . The first and last light of the day can bring long shadows and warm light to the landscape; take your images during these periods. . For me the most magical and alluring element of the landscape is water, because of its many forms (rain, mist, snow). Water is most reflective around dawn and dusk when there is little wind. . Dawn in autumn also bring ethereal mists. . Study the work of great landscape photographers and try to emulate their ideas. . Use the best camera you can afford and support it on a sturdy tripod. . Study image and colour composition. a good art book such as The elements of Drawing by John Ruskin, covers all aspects of landscape art. Exhibitions
